TÜV TRUST IT GmbH, part of the TÜV AUSTRIA Group, confirms compliance with data protection and data security criteria.
Customers of Stadtwerke Düsseldorf can now conveniently manage their accounts online. To facilitate this, the energy provider offers a comprehensive self-service portal on its website, whose security and quality have been thoroughly reviewed and certified by TÜV TRUST IT.
With the clearly structured and user-friendly self-service portal, customers have access to a wide range of online functions. These include submitting meter readings, registering or deregistering during a move, and managing contracts. Additionally, users can update contact and banking information, view online invoices, adjust payment installments, and simulate bills. Customers benefit from 24/7 availability and faster processing compared to traditional mail. Another positive aspect is the environmentally friendly nature of paperless communication.
To demonstrate the high security and quality standards of the self-service portal to its customers, Stadtwerke Düsseldorf commissioned TÜV TRUST IT to conduct an evaluation and certification based on the “Trusted Application” requirements catalog. This includes assessments of information security, data protection, secure software development, and technical security.
The project was carried out in several phases. In addition to a technical review of the infrastructure, relevant organizational processes for operating the application and infrastructure were examined. These organizational analyses were conducted through document reviews and supplementary interviews. The project also included a data protection check to verify the compliant handling of customer data.

“The self-service application of Stadtwerke Düsseldorf demonstrated compliance with data protection, data security, and secure operations during both technical and organizational evaluations,” explains Manuel Münchhausen, Senior Consultant at the IT security specialist, summarizing the results. “During the assessment, it became clear that the operation of the self-service portal shows a high level of maturity. Particularly noteworthy are the comprehensive procedures for managing information security and data protection, as well as the processes for technical operations.”
Carsten Domat, Head of Data Protection and Information Security Management at Stadtwerke Düsseldorf, welcomed the results from TÜV TRUST IT: “Stadtwerke Düsseldorf has recognized that data protection and information security are not just bureaucratic obligations, but also represent a competitive factor for the company. Our customers’ sensitivity regarding the confidentiality and integrity of their data has increased significantly. Therefore, we are required to demonstrate this appropriately. The certificate is a key indicator of that. At the same time, we commit to regularly reviewing our security standards.”
